HC quashes dowry case against ex-VC
CHENNAI: The Madras high court on Thursday quashed a dowry harassment charge against former Madras university vice-chancellor, P T Manoharan, and his wife and daughter, who had been hauled up by the police after the academician's daughter-in-law committed suicide in 2006.

Allowing petitions from them, justice S K Krishnan said the prosecution had not placed any prima facie material before the trial court to proceed against them under IPC provisions relating to dowry harassment, death and abetment of suicide.

Manoharan's daughter-in-law, Madhu Devi, had committed suicide on July 1, 2006, six years after her marriage to his son, Navin Kumar. Her husband and in-laws were chargesheeted by the police in connection with the case. Manoharan, his wife Kanakavalli and daughter Uma Selvakumar approached the court for quashing the charges against them.
