Google notebook and Microsoft oneNote

I happned to browse through google notebook online.On the web you always find a link saying "Note this". You need to have signed on to google to see this in classic google search results.

On clicking the "Note this", you add it to your notebook. As you can see in the link attached below, you can see it in google toolbar . Also in the righthand bottom bar, we can see the notepad opened. We can then check it when we want lateron. It is like drfating, getting ideas from web.


Google Notebook on internet is similar to Microsoft OneNote on the desktop.
Microsoft OneNote can help in collaging details like pictures, content and links. Google Notebook goes one step further in linking and caching webpages on the fly and very conceptual.

The difference is Onenote can be many files unlike google notebook where there is always a default notebook . the other drawback about google notebook is that we can add same pages onto the same notebook. My blogs searches I add onto the notebooks.

Wal-Mart has seen a sudden spike on our Brands Blog Buzz chart this week, leaping up to No. 1 as bloggers digest the latest news about the world's largest retailer (or more likely, blog for friends and family about their latest shopping trips there). Topping the Wal-Mart news this week is the retailer's announcement that its sales jumped 5.8% in June—a gain credited largely to the U.S. government's economic stimulus payments to consumers. Still, some U.S. bloggers are feeling less than patriotic about it. "Thanks to your decision to spend your money at Wally and their brethren, you ensured that our economic stimulus package stimulated China's economy," complains The House of Flying Monkeys. "For the slow learners, here's how it worked: Our incentive money was spent at Wal-Mart, on cheap Chinese junk." In other news, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia said this week that it will sell its Martha Stewart Crafts line at Wal-Mart starting this month. a) after you get an acknowledgement, take two copies of the same and sign and submit to relevant IT department.
b) Digital signatures are expensive, so you need to submit within 15 days.
c) the concept of 15 days is a buffer to determine the date of filing. In case you file online on 1st July, you are needed to submit acknowledgement within July 15th. Then you date of tax filing is considered as July 1st. In case you submit acknowledgement on July 16th, that is after 15 days of your online filing, then your tax return filing date is considered as July 16th.
d) In case you are NRI, the assessment officer is shown IT range14 (ward 6). But when you go to Mehri circle, HMT Bhavan, floor 4, south wing, you are asked to go to floor 3, room 303, helpline who in turn ask you to go to Nruputanhga road, IT office-6th floor as you are NRI. So please note your correct range/ward assesing office in your city in case you are NRI.

e) If you file using ITR-2 format xml, please mention the status NRI/individual and the correct range/ward office
f) Even if your taxable income is NIL, you can file e-tax returns.

MSCONFIG>EXE (windows XP)

Issues with closing the msconfig.exe. Do you want to fast boot your PC and remove all unnessary start programs. I am not a techie, but I tried to solve the issue by using msconfig.exe in Run prompt. Thereafter it was terrible to close the msconfig during startup. Here was my solution. The administrator login in safe mode also did not solve the issue.
Solution:
When you run msconfig.exe
You enter cmd-> msconfig.exe
and you get start programs
hen you close msconfig-> you get
restart options. kindly dont restart
Any change to msconfig creates a registry entry that will popup the msconfig diagnostic mode






a) Enable Regedit firstly
Once you have disabled the startup programs, also ensure you have regedit permission, see my another post to enable regeidt with 4 solutions.

e) Check the processes when you execute the process.
delete all programs that have embedded themselves under start. In my case it was dc.exe, fun.exe, other.exe among a host others. This needs a lot of skill and please refer sites like symantec and refer to guidelines to remove. Quickly delete the exe instances in the process explorer and kill threads. also delete the file themselves using shift + delete. The programs are self replicating worms and can recreate themselves.

f) Ensure you have deleted all startup versions of programs including worms/trojans under msconfig, close msconfig. deleted the msconfig regedit entry, deleted regedit entries.
sometimes, the folder options are disabled cleverly by worm.
Remove them in the startup program registry
Normally your folder options will be disabled by trojan. So change the folder options to show hidden files as well. Then delete these files as well



g) restart your computer
h) Hopefully your msconfig utility is solved.
Now download spydoctor from google pack. check for other malware and quartantine and delete themm from system.

It has been a horrific experience to get the google ads accepted. I ahve tried to post unique content with a flavour for Indians. However the google ad team thinks that uniqueness is not there. CAn the google ad team take time to see the topics I have covered.

Shedding Light On The Molecular Basis Of Crib Death
ScienceDaily (July 7, 2008) — Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a condition that unexpectedly and unexplainably takes the lives of seemingly healthy babies aged between a month and a year. Now researchers of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Monterotondo, Italy, have developed a mouse model of the so-called crib or cot death, which remains the leading cause of death during the first year of life in developed countries.

The model, recently published in Science, reveals that an imbalance of the neuronal signal serotonin in the brainstem is sufficient to cause sudden death in mice.

The brainstem, the lower part of the brain that forms the link to the spinal cord, coordinates many fundamental functions including control over cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Victims of SIDS show alterations in those brainstem neurons that communicate using the signalling molecule serotonin. Cornelius Gross and his group at the EMBL Mouse Biology Unit modified the serotonin system of mice to understand the role of this signalling molecule in the brainstem. They overexpressed an important receptor that regulates serotonin signalling, called serotonin 1A autoreceptor.

"At first sight the mice were normal. But then they suffered sporadic and unpredictable drops in heart rate and body temperature. More than half of the mice eventually died of these crises during a restricted period of early life. It was at that point that we thought it might have something to do with SIDS," says Gross.

Until now it was unclear how changes in serotonin signalling in the brainstem of SIDS infants are involved in sudden death. The findings in the mouse show that deficits in serotonin signalling in the brainstem can be sufficient to cause sudden death and strongly support the idea that a congenital serotonin defect could play a critical role in SIDS.

Serotonin neurons in the brainstem communicate to nerve cells in the spinal cord that innervate the heart and organs involved in temperature regulation such as brown fat tissue. This signalling is defective in the mouse model of SIDS. For example, when placed into a cold chamber the animals cannot properly activate brown fat tissue to produce heat. This inability to activate fundamental body systems under certain conditions is likely to explain why the mice succumb to sudden death.

While a complete block of serotonin signalling does not lead to death, upsetting its intricate balance by overexpressing serotonin 1A autoreceptor can. In response to serotonin the receptor initiates a negative feedback mechanism that reduces serotonin release and dampens down the signal to the body. The researchers caution, however, that it is unlikely that the exact same molecular mechanism leads to SIDS in humans. Nevertheless, the mouse model will help to shed light on how serotonin signalling, when dysfunctional, can be life-threatening.

"We hope the mouse model will help identify risk factors for SIDS. One open question is whether like in SIDS, the animals die during sleep and whether we can identify which mice will die by looking at their heart rate or body temperature before the crisis. Ultimately, we hope it will give new ideas to doctors about how to diagnose babies at risk for SIDS," says Enrica Audero, who carried out the research in Gross' lab.

It's that time of the year again. You knew all along that it would come, whether you ignored or waited for it. The pages of the calendar have turned and you can hear colleagues waking up to it.

And you know you can't run away from it any more. We are talking about 31 July, the day we are reminded of our bondage, the price we have to pay for many of the good things in our life.

This happens to be the last day for filing income tax returns for all salaried Indians, be they resident or non-resident. Of course, you must have done everything legally possible to maximise your freedom from this bondage called tax. But then, the law permits you only that much. The rest, as they say, is illegal.

You might also have wondered about the word return being used for an outgo. Maybe it's because governments always want citizens to see things from their point of view, perhaps for the larger good.

Filing of tax is compulsory for everyone whose gross total income - the income under the five heads (salary, business, capital gains, house property or other sources) before allowing for any deductions such as insurance premium - exceeds the basic exemption limit.

For financial year 2007-08 (assessment year 2008-09), this limit was Rs 145,000 for women below 65 years of age, Rs 195,000 for senior citizens (above age 65 years) and Rs 110,000 for any other individual. It is compulsory for every person exceeding these limits to file the return before the prescribed date, even if their employer has taken care of their tax liabilities by reducing their salaries by the necessary amounts before paying the rest to them. Paid this way, it is known as tax deducted at source or TDS.

Filing of the form

There are two income tax return forms, ITR-1 and ITR-2, for salaried individuals. Your sources of income (they will fall under one or more of the five sources mentioned earlier) will decide your form. You will have to submit the filled form to the tax authorities and get an acknowledgement from them.

Use ITR-1 to file your tax return if your income is from salary, pension or interest. In case of any capital gains, income or loss from house property and income from any other source, you will have to use ITR-2. You can go to www.incometaxindia.gov.in/download_all.asp to download these forms.

You will find ITR-1 relatively simple to fill up. A prerequisite for the exercise is Form 16, the certificate that comes from the employer showing the TDS from the income chargeable under the head salary. ITR-1 is almost a replica of Form 16. All you have to do is pick the numbers from Form 16 and put them in the ITR form.

Apart from salary income, there is an important component of income that many taxpayers ignore while filing their returns. It is the interest income earned from the funds lying in savings accounts in banks. Disclosing that, however small it may be, is mandatory.

You just have to add the total interest credited to your bank account in the last financial year. Scrutinise your income tax return to ensure that no taxable income is undisclosed. After you file your return, the tax authorities will hand you an acknowledgment. That's it, you are through with the filing of returns.

You will need to fill up ITR-2 if you, as a salaried individual, have made any capital gains. This form is filled in the same way as ITR-1. In addition, you will have to fill in income, if any, from house property and other sources.

How to file

The actual filing of return can be done either by using the traditional paper form or electronically, over the Internet. The second, known as e-filing, is fast catching up. The digital method is compulsory for companies, but optional for salaried individuals still. However, it may well become compulsory for individuals with a certain level of income in times to come. So, it may not be a bad idea to familiarise yourself with this process.

Before you start filing the return, check if you would be getting a refund from the IT Department or have to pay tax. In case of the latter, even before starting the filing process, you should first get hold of Form 280, fill it up and deposit it any bank along with the tax payable in cash or cheque. You can also pay tax through Internet banking. In both cases, you will get a receipt number which has to be quoted in the ITR form.
Doing it offline

There are two options - you may either submit the ITR form at the nearest income tax office after filling it up yourself, or you may get a chartered accountant or a tax return preparer to do it for you. Try to visit the ITO well before the last date for filing return as crowds increase as 31 July draws near.

You may also take help from the public relations officer of the ITO to fill the form. No documents or investment proofs need to be attached with the form, but remember to bring photocopies or originals with you to the ITO. These will come in handy if you are asked to authenticate the maths.

The fee of a CA would depend on your income slab and the number of income sources. Typically, it would range from Rs 300 to Rs 2,000, depending on the complexities involved. One good thing about filing through a CA is that it would bring down the margin of error to nil. Also, depending on the acumen of the CA, which often gets reflected in the quality of his practice, he would suggest some tax saving ways to you for the future.

Doing it online

E-filing is done through sites authorised by the IT Department to file taxes on your behalf. To e-file, you will have to input the details of Form 16 in the software of the website, which would automatically generate an electronic return in XML format.

This format helps in sharing of structured data across different information systems. A PDF file of the relevant ITR form is also created along with the XML format. You can download this ITR form, submit it at the ITO and get an acknowledgement.

Save the XML file to your desktop and then upload it on incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in - the IT Department site. Some sites also have provision for online payment of tax. Use of a digital signature will render the e-filing process complete without involving paperwork and visits to the ITO.

In case DS is used, the acknowledgement will be emailed to you. If you upload the file on the tax department's site without the DS, the acknowledgement, called ITR-V, emailed to you will have to be submitted at an ITO within 15 days of downloading it. A DS can be acquired from any of the agencies authorised by the government for the job, including the private and government websites meant for filing tax returns.

E-filing is not just convenient and saves time, it can also be done from anywhere. What is especially important is that the online method reduces or even eliminates the interface between the tax assessee and tax officials.

Online sites

Among the major sites offering e-filing facilities are Taxspanner, Taxsmile and Taxshax. You can either take printouts of the relevant ITRs from these three sites and physically submit them or upload your XML file on the IT Department's site.

Taxspanner uploads the taxpayer's file directly and emails ITR-V to him. With Taxsmile, you can submit the forms at any of its offices spread over the country. They will then forward it to the ITO.

All the three sites are secure and easy to navigate. The major difference among them is on two counts - the number of income sources covered and the process. Get clarity on the cost and features offered. The minimum cost package would normally be only for salary income. The advanced version might be required if you have income from other sources.

The tax sites also differ in the way they ask for information and allow you to input figures. Taxshax gets most of the figures filled up in a single page. Taxspanner has a step-by-step guide and takes one piece of information on one page. Taxsmile gives both these options.

Use of DS raises the cost of e-filing. The amount of this increase varies across tax sites. A DS can be obtained from Taxsmile for Rs 500. Apart from this, you will have to pay for the basic package. Your DS comes with a validity period, after which it has to be renewed.

A DS from Taxspanner, for example, is valid for two years. This site offers a deal in which you can file returns for three years at a cost of Rs 250 a year. To get your DS from a tax site, download the relevant form from it, attach the required documents, such as your identity and address proofs, and courier them to the address concerned. The entire process of acquiring a DS may take around 15 days.

A tax return can also be filed from the government site - incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/index.jsp - meant for it. Your PAN will work as the username for registering at this site.

Should you go online?
Internet accessibility is growing, but it is still out of reach for many of the 40 million taxpayers. For those who have access to it and want to save time, the digital signature way looks ideal - you will be able to file the return in a few minutes from the comfort of your home or office. E-filing without the DS is almost the same as filing returns offline.

Tax laws can often seem like a cross between a Rubik's cube and Mutthiah Muralitharan's spin bowling. The three private tax sites get around this by making themselves friendly to taxpayers and not making filing of return dependent on an intricate understanding of the workings of tax laws. They empower with information and knowledge while taking the taxpayer step-by step through the entire process of tax filing. The details of the return filed get saved in the database of these sites and can be accessed anytime in the future.

If you have any specific doubts concerning the filing process, email the tax site to clear them. Getting clarity is important as some sites do not include things like income from business or profession, losses of earlier years brought forward or clubbed income. If tax is due, check if you can pay it through the site.

Stick to the deadline

Whether you are going offline or online, make sure your are on the right side of 31 July. If tax is due and return is not filed till 31 March of the following year, a penalty of Rs 5,000 is levied. While IBM and Linden Labs are cozying up to each other, Google has just released its own virtual world: Lively. Lively is available through a browser plugin for Firefox and Internet Explorer. It is Windows only for now. Lively does not feature one coherent world like Second Life but splits worlds up into different rooms. Lively was originally developed as a 20% project my Niniane Wang.

Lively runs completely in the browser and you use your Google account to log in and create your own avatars. Within the world, you can interact with other users, very much like you would do in Second Life. You can also watch YouTube clips on virtual TVs and share your own photos.
Users can chose from a number of preset animations for their characters, ranging from shaking hands with others, to applauding, crying, etc. By double clicking on certain items in the virtual world, users can also often activate some preset animations such as sitting down on a chair or jumping off a dive board.

No wonder The Indian sensex is going through ups and downs and the political volatility is clearly showing in the the google trends. This is very evident in the time grpah analysis on a day which was very critical for India as a change in political dynamics and India with the world.

The G8 summit where Manmohan Singh will attends, the declaration to go to IAEA, the left thus withdrawing the support and an impending TRUST VOTE on the fllor of the house means that the economic and energy market in India is very volatile. So were the technical chartbusters in the sensex.

A Virtual Wallet for the Real World

Oxigen Services India, a Delhi-based solution provider, has facilitated this collaboration through OxiCash- its Virtual Mobile Wallet (VMW).

The prepaid-stored VMW helps customers pay their shopping bills through mobile phones. It can be used via the web, SMS, GPRS-enabled mobile phones, WAP, and other interfaces.

According to Pramod Saxena, chairman and managing director of Oxigen mobiles an inseparable accessory, and are a natural replacement of cash / wallets among people. "In the VMWs, easy and low cost data connectivity will enable safe and quick transactions including money transfer."


He said that the mobile number is used to create a virtual wallet, and also acts as the wallet ID. It is protected with a 4-digit security password.

To enable transactions, the user has to deposit cash at any of the Oxigen 45,000 outlets or can use credit / debit cards for an online transfer through the 'oxicash.in' portal.

According to Saxena, the central OxiCash server (developed by an in-house IT team) along with SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) ensures safety through encrypted transactions. The operating system is on Microsoft Windows and the transactions are processed on a Microsoft SQL server.

Each SMS transaction on OxiCash is password protected. The company is also adding a 3-tier, two factor authentication-based security structure on SMS.

Oxigen avails the services of telecom service providers such as MTNL, BSNL, Vodafone, Airtel, etc. For OxiCash, it has tie-ups with retailers like INDMall, Asia Home Store, Game Stations, Bangalore Shoppe, etc.

Cannot Access Regedit, How to Fix It?
Many times when working on a computer that has been infected with a virus, trojan, or piece of spyware I find myself with my most important command, Regedit, the Windows Registry Editor being disabled. Virus creators like to disable the Registry Editor so it makes solving the problem and removing the issue difficult.Sometimes administrators in IT departments may place restrictions on using the regedit command to keep employees from changes things on company computers, but viruses and other issues may also try to disable it.Listed below you will find the different ways to enable regedit, the Registry Editor.

First we'll begin with the method that appears to work the best.Method 1 - Enabling the Registry with VBScriptDoug Knox, a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional, has created a VBScript that enables or disables the Registry Editor based on the following location in the registry. Of course, since the registry editor is disabled, you can't change it manually, so Doug wrote a Visual Basic Script to accomplish the task.HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\Visit Doug's page and download Registry Tools VBScript to your desktop, double-click on it to run it, then reboot your computer and try to open the Registry Editor.If this fix didn't solve your problem, try method two shown below.
Method 2: Use Symantec's tool to reset shell\open\command registry keysSometimes worms and trojans will make changes to the shell\open\command registry entries as part of their infections. This will cause the virus to run each time you try to run an .exe file such as the Registry Editor. In these cases, visit Symantec's website and download the UnHookExec.inf file to your desktop. Right-click on it and choose Install. Restart your computer and then try to open the Registry Editor.Method 3: Rename Regedit.com to Regedit.exe
Some viruses and other malware will load a regedit.com file that is many times a zero byte dummy file. Because .com files have preference over .exe files when executed if you type REGEDIT in the run line, it will run the regedit.com instead of the real regedit.exe file. Delete the regedit.com file if its a zero byte file to restore access to REGEDIT. Control your PC from anywhere is too tempting. I did a demo version for 30 days and it also includes one free account where you can log in to multiple computers defined as free connection except that you dont get any additional features. Still worth its money as freeware.

Being from India, I appreciate this when I comapre to webex. Teamplayer is another software which I have used to relay desktops across remotes. I believe Logmein is superfast and it works client to client unlike webex where it is client-> server -> client . Logmein alos uses a anaonymous id with a server authentication certicate. The Print functionality of windows is used by Logmein from its basic look.

I being a consultant hardly care. However I also had a problem with windows registry lock with logmein. So please double check if any software is installed if your have a registry lock. This I will cover in another Blog where I will focus on problems on registry lock in my workplace.

All in all, Logmein scores 8 out of 10. Very good for independent consultants, IT service providers
