Mother elusive for 4 years after killing her five year old child

KOLKATA: Four years after the death of five-and-a-half-year-old Tanmay Das, police arrested the victim's mother for killing him.

Police claimed that Tanmay's mother Sangeeta poisoned her only son and left him at Medical College Hospital. For the past four years, she had been absconding, but was finally nabbed by police from Muchipara police station on Monday afternoon.

In the evening of January 29, 2004, an unconscious Tanmay Das was admitted to the emergency ward of Medical College Hospital. After a few hours, the child died.

The register of the hospital revealed that the child was admitted by Sangeeta Das, who claimed to be his mother. The attending doctor suspected the death was unnatural and asked police to conduct an autopsy because the doctor noticed symptoms of poisoning.

But during that time, Sangeeta disappeared. Police sent the body for autopsy and probe revealed that Sangeeta lived in Chunapukur Lane at Muchipara. Her husband Kartik Das is a motor mechanic. In 2003, the couple was separated and the child was in Sangeeta's custody. Kartik, too, stays in the Muchipara area, police sources said.

Initially, police treated the case as an unnatural death. But Kartik was not satisfied and moved court, seeking a probe. The judiciary accepted his plea and ordered the police to register an FIR on Kartik's complaint and also asked police to submit a detailed probe report.

In 2007, police produced the post-mortem report where the autopsy surgeon clearly stated that the boy had died of poisoning from Cyfer Methrin.

Police started a murder case against Sangeeta, but she remained elusive. Police, in their chargesheet, mentioned Sangeeta as absconding. Finally, she was nabbed and produced in court on Tuesday.
