Aug 1 2008: Solar eclipse in India to last two hours

Every year we have two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses. A solar eclipse and lunar eclipse are sepearted by two weeks. We get to see a total solar eclipse on August 1 2008. The following lunar eclipse will be on August 16 2008. Previous total solar eclipse occureed on 2006 March 29 .Next total Solar eclipse will occur on 2009 July 22 .

The solar eclipse being total will last for two hours in India. In Delhi, the maximum impact will be impact at 5:02 pm. the visual treat will start at 4:03 pm in Delhi and last for about two hours. In rest of country, the eclipse will be partial. Bangloreans can go to the planeterium to see the unique phenomenon.

The Moon is not a planet, so orbits the Earth, not the Sun. It takes around 27days to complete its orbit . The exceptions are a New Moon and a Full Moon. What's the difference. A New Moon occurs once a month when the Sun and Moon conjunct. That is, they are at the exact same position in the sky. We can't see the Moon at this point, it's blocked out by the Earth's shadow. Because these two heavenly bodies come together, it is always in the sign that the Sun is moving through. A New Moon is always a time of new beginnings. Since our early history we have planted on a New Moon. Not for any superstitious reasons, but because early man discovered that crops and plants REALLY did grow better under a New Moon. In astrology you have the power of the Sun and Moon combined, as they are both coming from exactly the same point in the heavens. A New Moon is the time to launch and begin new projects. But what should we be launching?

There are 13 lunar months in each year and 12 solar months - that means that each year one sign gets 2 New Moons - the 11 other signs get one New Moon. That means that each sector of your chart has at least one New Moon. There will be a New Moon that is the best time to launch a new career, a new job, a new romance, a new home or a new creative endeavour.
Full Moon comes around 13 - 14 days after the New Moon. The Moon has travelled half way around the signs and is now opposing the Sun. They are at opposite sides of the zodiac. The word opposing is the same in any language. To oppose means they're at loggerheads. That is just one of the reasons why a Full Moon can be a very difficult time emotionally. Also, because a Full Moon is a time of fruition. The Moon is full and so to is the situation in whatever sector of our chart the Full Moon falls.

Like the New Moon, there are 13 Full Moons each year - one more than there are Solar months. When the extra Full Moon also falls in the same calendar month - it's called a Blue Moon - this is rare, only happening every 3 - 5 years. Hence the saying 'once in a Blue Moon'. A blue Moon isn't the second full Moon in a calendar month
That idea came from a typo in a 1946 issue of Sky and Telescope magazine. A science reporter used the mag as the source for her astronomy radio program about blue Moons in 1980. The program was heard - and used - by the authors of a children's almanac, which ended up being the source for a question in Trivial Pursuit. The definition isn't right, but this 60 year old typo is so entrenched in folklore and pop culture it might as well be.
(Sky and Telescope magazine have well and truly made up for their misprint. They did an extremely tedious analysis of 40 editions of the Maine Farmers' Almanac, the source for the 1946 article and it looks like a blue Moon in 19th century Maine was actually the third full Moon in a season that's got four full Moons).

The uniqueness of this lunar event makes the phenomenon of two new moons in the same month of August on August 1 and August 30. Such a new moon is sometimes called a blue moon. The Moon usually looks white because it's reflecting white light from the Sun. It doesn't have an atmosphere, so there's no air or dust to filter the light and change its colour.
If terra-lunar geometry was more thoroughly thought out, we'd have a total lunar eclipse every full Moon.

But during a total eclipse the only light that reaches the Moon has already been filtered by the Earth's atmosphere. Once light hits all that gas and dust, it gets scattered. Long wavelength reddish light tends to bounce right out into space - it's the light that reaches the Moon. Shorter wavelength blue light keeps bouncing around off molecules and doesn't really get a chance to escape. (That's why the sky usually looks blue - the red light bounces away, so blue is all that's left).

The uniqueness of the event when a

SSM fissures the WTO Geneva talks

India was opposed to high tariff limits proposed by US, EU. Japan and China supported India for opposing attempts to dilute the triggers in the Special Safeguard Mechanism (SSM) to check unforeseen rise in imports of farm goods.

India's concerns were to protect
a) Rising Imports of Farm goods which is harm indian farmers livelihood.
b) Protect nascent industries in India like the auto sector.

Kamal Nath is a seasoned politician and he could not compromise on agriculture given his party has to face National elections. So was the case with US WTO trade representative which made George Bush call Manmohan Singh three times to get India on his side. George Bush also has to leave the office with WTO as his successful accomplishments.

Quadruple 8 marks Beijing Olympics

It is no secret that Chinese love number 8 and it is considered auspicious. SO on August 8th,, the eight month of year 2008 when the time is eight, China will have signalled to the world the emergence of a new superpower in world which has organized the Olympic Games. What better than Quadruple 8 to signify this.

Welcome to the world of Ni Hao, How are you? welcome to the Forbidden City. World has finally come to a enviable civilization and China by hosting it has recolored the history. Olympics is as ancient as Greeks and Chinese are as modern as any superpower in world. The convergence of the Olympics with power Of China in sports will be an unmatched effort in 2008 Olympics. China is bound to give tough competition to the other countries.

Though the principal venue is the Birds's Nest, China has multiple venues. As you an see the centre of beijing is Forbidden city and Tinnamean square in red. around the birds nest as you go towards the Great Wall North, slight northeast, you find the Birds Nest. Most Olympic venues are around this principal venue. The other venues like water sports, basket ball games, archery are spread around the city.

The mascots of Olympics are like the olympic rings. They signify the idea to be friendly with children around the world. Children love animals and the five mascots represent the most famous animals and birds from China.

a) Fish
b) Panda
c) Tibetan Antelope
d) Swallow
e) Olympic Flame

The olympic opening games are already mired in controversy as Korean broadcaster has published the unauthorized footage and subsequent Internet links were removed. Storm over rights, censorship grows as Olympics nears. Condemning China as "the world's biggest jailer of journalists," the World Association of Newspapers yesterday called on the IOC to make China keep its commitment. Reporters Without Borders said it was "yet another broken promise" by China since it was awarded the Games. This blatant media censorship adds one more broken promise that undermines the claim that the Games would help improve human rights in China," Amnesty East Asia researcher Mark Allison said.

A spokesman for the Beijing Games organizing committee said censorship would not prevent journalists from reporting the Games, though he acknowledged there would be no access to some Web sites.
"A small number of Internet sites are blocked, mainly because they violate Chinese law," Sun Weide said. "We hope that foreign media will respect Chinese law in this matter."
Mr. Sun identified sites linked to the Falun Gong spiritual movement, which is outlawed in China, as ones that would remain censored for the foreign press at Olympic venues.

Doping , sex determination are the two principal factors that will determine how successful the olympics of 2008 will be. This is in additon to negative things you might have heard about things like bad air, algae, locusts, terrorism, Tibet, Darfur, freedom of the press and human rights, or lack thereof.

Olympics was supposed to be the best marketing opportunity for coporates and multinational companies. After IBM withdrew, this year Olympics was being hyped as a blockbuster for marketers, a chance to ride the wave of Chinese national pride that may translate into billions of dollars in sales of Adidas sneakers, McDonald's (MCD) Big Macs, or General Electric (GE) wind turbines. But Beijing 2008 is likely to go down as the high-water mark of the Olympic sponsorship program. While the Games offer unique attractions to sponsors, multinationals are already looking more critically at whether the payback will be worth it for future Games. Of the 12 global sponsors for the Beijing Olympics, only eight have signed on for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver and 2012 Summer Games in London. (The International Olympic Committee sells sponsorships in four-year increments to cover both Winter and Summer Games.)
There are 9 new events introduced this time -
Two from the new cycling discipline of BMX. Women will compete in the 3000 m steeplechase for the first time. Marathon swimming events for men and women over the distance of 10 kilometers. Team events (men and women) in table tennis will replace the doubles events. In fencing, women’s team foil and women’s team sabre will replace men’s team foil and women’s team epee.

50 years of Nasa

First management team from NASA in 1958-60

comments
50 Years Ago: NASA Born in Sputnik's Wake
On July 29, 1958, Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, officially establishing NASA

NASA completes 50 years and it still is a vibrant entity. It wishes to conquer the nearby planets, achieve low cost solar transports and explore solar weather. 50 years is a small time in universe , however NASA has achieved astronomical progress and has set clear targets for China, European, Japanese and Indian space programs. The race to the moon will soon hot up by 2025 and world propert prices will soon get a competition from solar brothers.

Probably NASA needs a rename as NESA , e standing for enterprising.

It is instructive to recall the objectives for NASA that emerged in section 102 of the final Space Act:
The expansion of human knowledge of phenomena in the atmosphere and space;
The improvement of the usefulness, performance, speed, safety, and efficiency of aeronautical and space vehicles;
The development and operation of vehicles capable of carrying instruments, equipment, supplies, and living organisms through space;
The establishment of long-range studies of the potential benefits to be gained from, the opportunities for, and the problems involved in the utilization of aeronautical and space activities for peaceful and scientific purposes;
The preservation of the role of the United States as a leader in aeronautical and space science and technology and in the application thereof to the conduct of peaceful activities within and outside the atmosphere;
The making available to agencies directly concerned with national defense of discoveries that have military value or significance, and the furnishing by such agencies, to the civilian agency established to direct and control nonmilitary aeronautical and space activities, of information as to discoveries which have value or significance to that agency;
Cooperation by the United States with other nations and groups of nations in work done pursuant to this Act and in the peaceful application of the results thereof;
The most effective utilization of the scientific and engineering resources of the United States, with close cooperation among all interested agencies of the United States in order to avoid unnecessary duplication of effort, facilities and equipment

Randy Pausch quotes

Brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want something badly enough. They are there to keep out the other people.
- Randy Pausch ( 1960-2008 )

Be willing to apologize. Proper apologies have three parts: 1 ) What I did was wrong. 2 ) I’m sorry that I hurt you. 3 ) How do I make it better? It’s the third part that people tend to forget…. Apologize when you screw up and focus on other people, not on yourself.
- Randy Pausch ( 1960-2008 )

Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted…. I probably got more from that dream [of playing professional football] and not accomplishing it than I got from any of the ones that I did accomplish.

The best piece of parenting advice I’ve ever heard is from flight attendants. If things get really tough, grab your own oxygen mask first.

Be good at something; it makes you valuable…. Have something to bring to the table, because that will make you more welcome.

We can’t change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand. If I’m not as depressed as you think I should be, I’m sorry to disappoint you.

- Randy Pausch ( 1960-2008 )

When you are doing something badly and no one’s bothering to tell you anymore, that’s a very bad place to be. Your critics are the ones still telling you they love you and care.

What are cloud computing testbeds?

IBM Cloud Computing and Autonomic Computing: IBM first introduced the term "Autonomic Computing" in 2001 and issued a Grand Challenge to the industry to build computer systems that regulate themselves much in the same way the autonomic nervous system regulates and protects the human body. Autonomic Computing was unveiled as a solution to combat the rising complexity of managing advanced computer systems. IBM has since integrated autonomic capabilities in over 500 product features into more than 100 distinct products and services. With Autonomic Computing, the company has focused on simplifying data center operations with virtualization, provisioning, databases, maintenance, energy management, security and other areas.

The word green soon embodied the word "word cloud". efficiency, energy or overall ROI with an idea of 1000+ servers working to produce the best results for a human crowd working across. The relatedness of cost is more important with cloud networks as freeware is considered more desirable. Also the usage of latest technologies at a lower cost is the ultimate goal. It is like perestroika in the communist regime.

Lets break down the game as why testbed environments are getting popular and in case of amazon and Google,even Internet industrial use.

How Amazon cashes in on its Cloud http://www.it-analysis.com/blogs/Judith_Hurwitz/2008/5/how_amazon_cashes_in_on_its_cloud.html clearly mentions how Amazon is able to scale on hardware growth which its customers will find hard to match like 10GB to 100 TB in a month . Amazon offers cheaper more reliable options by virtualization of servers. Also Amazon gets the best services and applications for the customer to use. The cloud theory breaks down traditional paradigms of world computing.

Google by offering free applications like gmail/picassa has taken the cloud theory beyond the natural office which debunks even free OS offers like linux coupling with Jboss. The much touted web browser can be even vitalized using applications like citrix or even invoking virtual desktops with technologies like Logmein and TeamPlayer.

So what essentially is a cloud is defined by industrial preference to use the servers and reorganization of servers for the same. for example cuil boasts of a huge database of index servers which seems less efficient than google index database. However cuil industrial use may beat google for category based search and cuil will co-exist with google for high end searches.

Internet clouds are a interlinked clouds with millions of servers and active trillions of clients requesting soap, on demand services from multiple gadgets. The ability to provide results in cost efficient way is the testbed cloud server maze testing. Example google stores its picassa servers on virtualization for hardware reasons for active accounts only would be a test ingredient for a cloud server arrangement. example google.co.uk could host it instead of cloud google.co.in

A rudimentary test cloud bed would be based on on demand applications for the internet with analysis of emerging applications with focus of backward compatibility with the old world internet

HP, Yahoo, Intel Launch Cloud Computing Test Bed have launched a new cloud computing research initiative called the Cloud Computing Test Bed. Users will be able to build and launch new applications on the platform.
It’s being described as “a globally distributed, Internet-scale testing environment designed to encourage research on the software, data center management and hardware issues associated with cloud computing at a larger scale than ever before.” Other partners include the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) (which is distinct from the MDA, I believe, which is unfortunate), the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany:

Governments have also launched non internet cloud beds like the e-governance initiatives of Indian government with automatic ballot boxes, e-fling taxes, pan cards. It makes more sense in a low cost cloud network to achieve results of the numerous application and the usage can be better patronized.

ELCOT (Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited ) misses the microsfot wave

The decision to go for Linux over windows by ELCOt with a buy rate of more than 1 Lakh laptops at prices of 31,717 to 29,429 is a interesting question. The students will eventually buy the software and then with 360 GB-160GB, opt for a partition of linux and may install a pirated version. Eventually microsoft stands to gain as sooner or later the students will need to use Office products and thus need to go for a licensed MS office student pack that cost roughly 5000 for basic office 2007 like word/excel/onenote for 3 user licenses.
So it is a win win situation for MS, linux and students as well as hardware vendors except for Piracy in India. Hope Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited had thought of the piracy issue.

The bundle also contains a Virtual Box using which the users can install any software from within the Linux environment. While the high-end configuration costs Rs 31,717, the lower-end costs Rs 29,429.These laptops can be purchased only through online booking at the ELCOT's website www.elcot.in. The scheme ends on July 31.

Sachivalaya Vahini on Karnataka government

Sachivalaya Vahini site is http://164.100.80.70/svahini

or http://www.karnataka.gov.in/svahini where one can search for letters , file search, document search .

Why people went wrong: the culprit is Prajavani site People were searching http://www.karnataka.gov.in/sunshine today . This leads to no hits as as mentioned in site http://trendsanalysis.blogspot.com/2008/07/wwwkarnatakagovinsunshine.html.

Prajavani site mentions http://www.prajavani.net/Content/Jul292008/state2008072890019.asp about http://www.karnataka.gov.in/svshini/

Unfortunately svshini leads to sunshine as replacement help in google. that's why it is http://www.karnataka.gov.in/sunshine .

Monetary tightening by RBI fixing CRR and repo to 9

July 29 2008 As per the weak monsoon data, RBI decided to tighten CRR rates and fixed repo rate to control mid term inflation.

http://rbi.org.in/scripts/NotificationUser.aspx?Id=4380&Mode=0

As a result of this tightening, the call rates for market will tend to increase. This is a measure for removing the volatility of market as well as reducing the total cash available for banks to lend to corporates for their expansion plans.

CRR rate is at 9. The expectation is that PLR rate will increase from 12.75-13.25 to 13-13.5 for the top 5 banks. Interestingly this is the second time within a month, RBI has hiked the CRR rate by 25 basis point.

The reverse repo rate being 6 only influences the call market rates. However the difference of fixed repo and reverse repo is 300 basis points thus curtailing the M3 money circulation further as the PLR rate could be increased.

RBI states that inflation concerns are its top priority. with Oil prices showing a downward trend from 145$ per barrel to 123$ per barrel and towards 100$, the RBI has flexed muscles at the right time. This would end up in lowering the oil imports mid term plans mainly due to liquidity concerns. The monsoon data used by RBI showed a grim picture. The reality is within the past week, the monsoon data has picked up thus increasing the food security and energy security of key southern states. RBI has hit the nail at the correct time and with nuclear deal closed, the signs of upward inflation could be lowered. However the internal assessment of RBI points to 16% inflation. With this monetary tightening, we could see the stagnation of inflation at 13% which no doubt is also higher.

It remains to be seen how the markets respond to this tightening.

Official site of Karnataka government

The Karnataka government site is a nice site http://www.karnataka.gov.in/

Anna Patterson's cuil has a search engine bigger than google!

If you wish CUIL search includes your website, kindly send a mail to crawler@cuil.com
as per site FAQ
http://www.cuil.com/info/webmaster_info/
google has a competition. Cuil Launches Biggest Search Engine on the Web. The super-stealth search project was founded by highly respected search experts. Husband and wife team Tom Costello (CEO) and Anna Patterson (VP Engineering) were joined by Russell Power. Patterson and Power are also ex-Google employees, and the company has been the subject of intense speculation over the last couple of years. Cuil, a technology company pioneering a new approach to search, unveils its innovative search offering, which combines the biggest Web index with content-based relevance methods, results organized by ideas, and complete user privacy. Cuil (www.Cuil.com) has indexed 120 billion Web pages, three times more than any other search engine.

120 Billion web pages in Index, with far few computers than google, Cuil shows the way the google graduates turning more and more options for end customers.

Welcome to Cuil—the world’s biggest search engine. The Internet has grown. We think it’s time search did too.
The Internet has grown exponentially in the last fifteen years but search engines have not kept up—until now. Cuil searches more pages on the Web than anyone else—three times as many as Google and ten times as many as Microsoft.

Rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics, Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance. When we find a page with your keywords, we stay on that page and analyze the rest of its content, its concepts, their inter-relationships and the page’s coherency.

Then we offer you helpful choices and suggestions until you find the page you want and that you know is out there. We believe that analyzing the Web rather than our users is a more useful approach, so we don’t collect data about you and your habits, lest we are tempted to peek. With Cuil, your search history is always private.

Cuil is an old Irish word for knowledge. For knowledge, ask Cuil.

Philosophy of Cuil
The Internet is getting bigger and more disorganized every day. Cuil’s goal is to solve the two great problems of search: how to index the whole Internet—not just part of it—and how to analyze and sort out its pages so you get relevant results.
Cuil’s founders worked with other search engines and knew that tinkering with old systems wouldn’t work. A fundamentally different approach was needed. So we’ve developed new architecture and algorithms that can handle the exponential growth of the Internet and organize results that reflect its enormous complexity.

Cuil believes that:

Size matters
Size matters because many people use the Internet to find information that is of interest to them, even if it’s not popular. Existing technology can’t keep up with the increasing volume of Web pages. If a search engine is incapable of indexing the Internet properly how can it hope to provide accurate search results? Imagine if the phone company decided to stop listing infrequently called numbers in the phone book. Maybe no one phones your grandmother much, but if her friend from the old neighborhood wants to get in touch, shouldn’t her number be in the book? Cuil lists all the numbers, even the ones that aren’t called much. Because one day someone will need that number.

Popularity is useful, but not always important
Popularity is useful, but has dominated search results so heavily that it gets harder and harder to find the page you want, especially if your search is a complex one. Cuil respects popular pages and recognizes that for many simple searches, popularity is an easy answer to your question. But for a deeper search, establishing relevancy is more than a numbers game. Cuil prefers to find all the pages with your keyword or phrase and then analyze the rest of the content on those pages. During this analysis we discover that your keywords have different meanings in different contexts. Once we’ve established the context of the pages, we’re in a much better position to help you in your search.

Organization is fundamental
The Internet is information; usually too much. Ten blue links is a simple concept which fails to reflect the huge diversity and variety of information available to you on the Web. Cuil organizes the Internet so you can find the information you want. We separate different ideas from each other so you can choose the one that interests you. We pick images to illustrate the idea behind each page to aid you in your choice. We include roll-over definitions and offer you ideas to refine your search. We can do all this because we believe that information is only useful when it’s sorted. Cuil’s goal is to guide you towards answers to the questions you’re not even sure how to ask.

Cuil analyzes the Web, not its users
Privacy is a hot topic these days, and we want you to feel totally comfortable using our service. Because Cuil analyzes Web pages and not click-throughs, we don’t need to know your search history and habits. So our privacy policy is very simple: when you search with Cuil, we do not collect any personally identifiable information, period. We have no idea who sends queries: not by name, not by IP address, and not by cookie. Your search history is your business, not ours. We don’t need to keep logs of our users’ search activity, so we don’t. For further details, read our Privacy Policy. Don’t worry, it’s short and to the point. No legal mumbo-jumbo.

Is web education so mystical enough to pay

There are several sites like http://www.ebizel.com/ that charge Rs. 7585 for a year to provide basic web educationto the hapless masses. The question that needs to be reflected is the mysticness of the Web education.

As per http://www.ebizel.com/products.php
They say "eBIZ Educational and Web Package worth's much more than its cost. We always try to add more features, services and products. For buying eBIZ Educational and Web Package pay Rs. 7585 for a year, which includes cost of eBIZ Educational and Web Package Rs.5500, annual maintenance charge of Rs.1250, 12 % service tax and 3 % Cess Charge on Service Tax to Govt. of India. In US $ 250 (Package cost US $ 200 + annual maintenance charge of US $ 40 + handling charges US $ 10 )." Really so?

Lets do the math. What are they offering? I guess the package is confused target for people who are wanna be bloggers. The way to learn blogging is a mindset stuff than a one year web demystifying mission. Lets get smart and bust the "Demystifying web" theory. Thats the blogging theory isn't it
